Please Support MCTV’s Community Organization Of The Month

MCTV is pleased to recognize The Stark County Hunger Task Force (SCHTF) as our Community Organization of the Month.  Please join us in thanking them for their efforts to improve the quality of life in Stark County.  You can support them financially at our office or online at http://www.starkhunger.org.

The Stark County Hunger Task Force has been fighting hunger in Stark County since 1981. We believe that in any community a number of individuals will experience a crisis during their lifetime in which they are unable to provide adequate food for themselves and their families, report SCHTF officials.  We depend on the generosity of our neighbors for assistance to satisfy that basic need for those who find themselves in crisis.

November heralds National Hunger Awareness Month marking the continuing battle against hunger in Stark County.  With the help of staff, board members, volunteers and community partners, SCHTF plans a wide array of events, fundraisers and food drives for Hunger Awareness Month.  School children pitch in also through local school districts’ participation in the 2013 Canvention Food Drives.  If your school is interested in participating, call Ralph Norton at 330-455-6667.

Stark County faces a startling challenge: at 16.7 percent, the county’s food insecurity rate is higher than the national (16.1 percent).  Translated, nearly one in six of our neighbors go hungry.  Worse yet, one in four children in the county live at or below the poverty level, and 10 percent of seniors face food insecurity.

We served more than 192,000 residents from every corner of the county with groceries in 2011 through our network of more than two-and-a-half dozen pantries, backpack programs, mobile pantries and the emergency pantry, but the problem continues to grow, reports Stark County Hunger Task Force officials.  We experienced a 43 percent increase in visitors this year, and the number of first-time visitors swells monthly.  On average, SCHTF sees more than 22,000 visitors a month.

There are many ways you can donate and volunteer, according to officials.
  • Donations
    • Food Donations – non-perishable foods are graciously accepted at the downtown Canton office, Suite 1637, in the Community Campus at Goodwill Monday through Friday.  The address is 408 9th St. SW, Canton. Hours are 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., but you may leave your donations with a building receptionist after office hours.  If you have a large donation, call the Task Force at 330-455-6667, and we will pick it up and deliver it to a Stark County pantry.
    • Host a Food Drive or Fundraiser – keep your donations local and contribute to Stark County.  All you have to do is collect the food and the Task Force will coordinate the pick-up or drop-off of your food.  If you’d rather host a fundraiser, remember that every $1 raised will provide seven pounds of food. Please call or go to the Website to register your food drive or fundraiser.
    • Monetary Contributions – private contributions are the sole means of financial support, aside from a small EFSP govermental stipend allocated each year.  Please consider making a tax-deductible contribution today, your neighbor’s dinner may rely upon it.  You can donate online at www.starkhunger.org, or please stop in to the MCTV lobby and contribute at our donation box.
  • Volunteering
    • Holiday Helpers – please call the Stark County Hunger Task Force at 330-455-6667 to volunteer during the upcoming holiday season.
    • Ushers and Ticket Takers – have you been to a show at the Canton Civic Center or Palace Theatre? If so, you’ve seen Stark County Hunger Task Force volunteers.  You can volunteer as an usher or ticket taker. In return for your services, we receive a donation for each volunteer.  Those interested in future opportunities, please contact the usher coordinator at 330-455-6667 or www.starkhunger.org.
