HFGM Celebrates 10th Anniversay
The Health Foundation of Greater Massillon (HFGM) was created in the spring of 1999 when Massillon Community Hospital and Akron General Medical Center entered into a joint venture to create a foundation within the city of Massillon to provide grants to non-profit organizations.  The goal of HFGM is to support programs and projects related to health and wellness in Western Stark, Eastern Wayne and Northern Tuscarawas counties.  The foundation started accepting grant requests in February of 2000.  To date, the foundation has distributed over $1.9 million dollars.
HFGM Supports Many Organizations
The Health Foundation of Greater Massillon has assisted a wide variety of programs and organizations throughout its 10 year history.  Prominent programs include The Western Stark Free Clinic, the Prescription Assistance Network, AHEAD, Massillon Boys’ and Girls’ Club, the Domestic Violence Project and dozens of other local agencies.  In this way, HFGM makes a real difference in the quality of life in our community by improving the health and wellness of area residents.
HFGM has provided more than 100 different grants and has been part of a myriad of efforts to improve the quality of life in the area.  These include support for medical training at Stark State, youth oriented programs, efforts to assist the needy, respite care for parents of developmentally challenged children, parks and recreation projects, assistance to local fire and police departments and many others.
HFGM Sponsors Grassroots and Future Community Leaders
The Health Foundation of Greater Massillon recognizes that community support for a healthier community can be a grassroots effort as well.  HFGM has created two programs to encourage citizens to become involved.
The Neighborhood Partnership Grant Program provides support for area Neighborhood Associations in Massillon.  The program provides grant dollars from the Health Foundation of Greater Massillon, The Community Development Block Grant program in Massillon and the Stark Community Foundation in Canton.  These grants are provided to the associations to be used in improving and beautifying their neighborhoods as well as helping to control the drug and crime problems within those neighborhoods.
The Community Giving High School Social Action Program was created in 2001 in conjunction with 11 area high schools within the foundation’s service area.  The program’s purpose is to inspire students toward philanthropy and community service.  The students along with their advisors create and carry out a program that addresses distinct, real health related issues through their projects as well as creating a sense of community among the areas where the schools are located.  The program includes an awards dinner where the Best Overall, Most Creative and Most Collaborative projects are recognized.
The Health Foundation of Greater Massillon works quietly to achieve its goal of enhancing the quality of life for residents of Western Stark, Eastern Wayne and Northern Tuscarawas counties by collaborating with and supporting qualified health and wellness organizations and innovative health programs and initiatives.
As a result of this effort, HFGM has become a premier community asset that supports health, wellness and activities leading to community well-being with leadership, integrity and vision.
